Oncologist

When my primary care physician told me he was referring me to an oncologist, I had no idea what type of specialist he was referring me to.

I went back to work and looked it up on Dictionary.com to discover he had referred me to a doctor that specializes in a branch of medicine that deals with tumors (i.e., cancer), including study of their development, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

I promptly fell out of my cubicle chair. It became obvious to me at this moment that whatever I had wasn’t going to be cured with a prescription of antibiotics from my local Walgreens.

There are oncologists that specialize in every type of cancer out there. Some of them see patients, some of them do research, and a lot of them do both. Most hospitals will also assign you a nurse coordinator to help keep track of your appointments and treatments.
